From the time one has an introduction with Ian with regard to recording, it becomes apparent that Ian has an understanding that musicians need to be relaxed and comfortable in order to perform well in front of a microphone in the coldness of any studio. Ian’s patience, commitment,perfectionism and feedback in adopting various techniques ensuring that musicians are not pressed with time and finances speaks volumes. All this put together comes across in the results of the recording.
The studio room itself is comfortable and intimate and not intimidating at all. A relaxed atmosphere indeed and much of it thanks to Ian’s arrangement of the room. There seems to be no task too big or too small, Ian applies himself with the same commitment to every piece of work.
Working with a sound engineer to record the music helps one to be objective about the work and Ian is very sensitive to this and is a great listener. Ian shows a very gentle side to his constructive feedback. He wants the musicians to be happy by adding a layer that has to be crafted with his knowledge of recording techniques. It is never about Ian himself. It is about enhancing the creative output in the most competent and professional manner while respecting the musician’s intent.
